Most of us have read or heard about the following verses on adultery. Matthew 5:27-30 (NIV)
You have heard that it was said, You shall
not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman
lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right
eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you
to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And
if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is
better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go
into hell.
Now, Matthew used some very graphic words in
describing what you should do to prevent adultery and give me a moment to try
and explain his point. The human mind has about seven thoughts a second. While there
is no way to actually know the true amount, this number is a good starting
point. Most of all these thoughts are spontaneous, what color you are looking
at, reading a sign, etc. It is completely natural to look at another human
being and be attracted to how pretty or handsome they are. After all, this is
what drew you to your spouse in the first place, remember? I will always remember
the first time my eyes beheld my bride. The image is burned into my brain. The
first thought is the natural one. The devil will always use the next thought to
try and derail you. The first thought is the natural one, where YOU take the
next thoughts is what Matthew is warning you about. If you let you mind wander,
or let the devil drive your thoughts, it is a sin. Period! You will miss out on
the joy of loving each other and the true meaning of marriage bliss and the
goal God had in mind when He gave us to each other.
